Winter Weather Resources

As the temperature begins to fall below freezing, be prepared. Below are resources for prepping your house, pipes, and well for freezing weather.

General Reminders for Preparing Your House for Freezing Weather

  1. Insulate Your Home: Begin by checking the insulation in your attic, walls, and floors. Adequate insulation is the first line of defense against cold. Insulating your pipes, especially those exposed or in unheated areas like garages, is also vital to prevent them from freezing and bursting.

  2. Seal Windows and Doors: Drafts can significantly cool your home, making your heating system work harder. Use weather stripping or caulk to seal any gaps in windows and doors. Insulated curtains can also help retain heat.

  3. Heating System Maintenance: Before the onset of cold weather, have your heating system checked and serviced by a professional. Replace filters and ensure that the system is functioning efficiently. If you have a fireplace, ensure the chimney is clean and the damper functions properly.

  4. Emergency Kit: Prepare an emergency kit containing essentials like bottled water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, blankets, and a first-aid kit. If you have a generator, check that it's in good working order and you have enough fuel.

  5. Protect Outdoor Plumbing: Drain water from outdoor faucets and sprinkler systems. Cover outdoor faucets with insulated foam covers to prevent freezing.

  6. Keep the Home Warm: Keep your thermostat set to a consistent temperature, day and night. During extreme cold, open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around the plumbing, especially if the pipes are in exterior walls.

  7. Prepare for Power Outages: In case of power outages, have alternative heating sources like wood-burning stoves or portable heaters. Remember to use them safely, keeping them away from flammable materials and ensuring proper ventilation.

  8. Plan for Pets: Bring pets indoors or ensure they have a warm, sheltered area with access to unfrozen water.

  9. Stay Informed: Keep an eye on weather forecasts and heed any warnings or advisories. Knowing what to expect can help you prepare adequately.

  10. Communicate with Neighbors: Check on neighbors, especially the elderly or those with special needs, who might need extra help during cold snaps.
